UC Running club travelled this weekend to Champaign, Illinois for the 2022 Illinois Relays. Regarded as the official unofficial Indoor national meet, the Illinois Relays is a very light hearted and competitive meet for club athletes. The Bearcats left before 5:00am to arrive in time for the meet.
UC had a strong start to the meet winning the men's high jump relay with the combined efforts of George Patil (1.905m, 1st) , Colin Sorenson (1.65m, 9th), and David Rosinski (1.60m, 14th). Up next in the line up was the 4x800 with the team of Kaden Mendenhall, Kyle Betz, Gunner Stockman, and Colin Sorenson taking 7th place out of a competitive field with a time of 8:22.65. Up next it was time for the 3k with Josh Rossman and Club VP Ben Safron with placing 31st and 51st in a field of over 100 runners with times of 9:28.62 and 9:47.27. Gunner Stockman and Kyle Betz then came back to run the mile in a field of over 200 runners. Kyle finished 24th overall with a 4:40.22 and Gunner came in with a hard kick to win his heat with a 4:42.05 to take 30th. Rounding out the men's events was the 4x400. At this point everyone had been awake for over 15 hours while expending lots of energy to put down the efforts mentioned previously above. Unbeknownst to UC, Illinois was allowing unorthodox batons and costumes to be worn for the relays. In a mad scrabble to throw something together, the Bearcats where able to pull through with crop tops and "pants". Cincinnati A team of George Patil, Colin Sorenson, Kyle Betz, and Kaden Mendenhall pulled off a 9th place finish with a 3:41.49 with George opening up the relay with a 52 second split to get the Bearcats out in prime position. Cincinnati B of Gunner Stockman, David Rosinski, Club VP Ben, and Josh Rossman where able to place 27th after a full day of 3k and mile races with a time of 4:03.77. The men finished out the meet placing 7th overall.
For the Women's team, Peach Widenhouse started out strong in the high jump to take 3rd place with a 1.50m jump. We have rumors that it was not her physical prowess but her legendary ego that was able to carry her over new heights in the high jump. Up next for the ladies was a very competitive 3k field. Peach Widenhouse, Victoria Schwegmann, and Marie Musser kept together to take 19th (11:51.05), 20th (11:51.14), and 23rd (11:58.03) place in a field of 40 plus runners. Finishing off for the Lady Bearcats in the mile was Peach Widenhouse running a 6:20.11 to place 68th in a field of over 100 runners. The ladies finished in a 3 way tie for 11th place.
