The UC Running Club had high hopes for the first race of the year. The Queen City Invitational is an exciting event every year. The chance to race in a collegiate meet! The Running Club would bring 12 runners this year, 10 men and 2 women. Bringing about plenty of chances for PR's. One limiting factor however, was the heat. At start of the race, the temperature was measured at a blistering 97 degrees! Some warmth that Ohio hasn't really seen much of this summer. This wouldn't stop the club from going out and giving it all though.
To start off the meet, the men's race was held at 5pm. Just about 250 athletes would be competing in this race alone. Leading the way for the Men's club, Alex Chappars came through in 49th place. His time of 16:18 was good for 3rd fastest 5k ever for the club! Next up was Kyle Klingler and Chris Gallagher in 82nd and 89th place. Both breaking the 17 minute mark, going 16:52 and 16:58. To finish out the scoring, Bryan Wilson finished in 134th in a time of 17:47 and Ian Klingler finished in 150th in a time of 18:10! The last two in the top 7 were Isaac Daffron and Kyle Kastrup. Isaac finished in 193rd place in a time of 19:49, and Kyle in 202nd place in a time of 20:17. The overall score of the team put them in 14th place out of 24 college teams!
Then onto the women's race. Although there was a shortage of runners, there was definitely no shortage of talent. Juliana Madzia would run a great race, breaking 20 minutes. And Alex Ballinger also had a great race, finishing around the 22 minute mark. Results aren't exact because some names didn't show up in the results unfortunately. Overall though, this was a great first meet for the club, and only brings higher expectations for the next race. That'll be on September 27th at Ball State University. MC5.
